Flambé Banana Foster

This is my favorite dessert so it was a must that I shared it.

Flambé Bananas is an artful technique which involves adding alcohol to the dish and setting it on fire.

It’s very exciting to watch the flames billowing from your dessert, and even more exciting trying the technique yourself.

Every time I crave this dessert, I risk burning my kitchen down, just to have a spoonful of this flamed sweetness.  So is it, an Attention Grabber?
Definitely! …but there’s no reason to burn the house down, just to have a fancy dessert.

So follow a few safety precautions before attempting and enjoy.
  1. Keep a fire extinguisher or lid nearby to extinguish the flame if necessary
  2. To prevent high flames, remove your pan from the fire before adding the alcohol
  3. Never pour the alcohol directly from the bottle to the hot pot because both can cause a large flame and may cause the flame to follow the fume back to the bottle.
  4. Refrain from preparing it, in the area of low ceilings.

Ingredients:
1/4 cup (½ stick) butter
4 tablespoons brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/3 cup banana liquor
1/3 cup Myers dark rum
1/3 cup rum
2 bananas cut in half lengthwise, then halved
2 scoops vanilla ice cream

Directions:
Combine the butter, sugar, and nutmeg in a flambé pan or skillet. Place the pan over low heat and cook, stirring, until the sugar dissolves into a caramel consistency. Stir in the banana liqueur, then place the bananas in the pan. When the banana sections soften and begin to brown, carefully add the rum. Tip the pan slightly and carefully ignite the rum. When the flames subside, remove the bananas, add your ice cream and generously spoon warm sauce over the top of the ice cream and serve immediately.

You may need to go to confession after having this dessert …Its that good J
